Waiting

Waiting

Xiaojin Zhang

Waiting, in its literal meaning, is an action, a mood, and an attitude. This theme stemmed from me feeling homesick during the Spring Festival in China when I was apart from my family. Feelings and emotions of sadness, loneliness, and the concept of being separated, apart and broken came to me when I was thinking about this experience. The types of photography I chose for my creative project are street photography and documentary photography.

Bruce Gilden is a wonderful street photographer known for taking close-up pictures. His work convinced me about the necessity of frontal shooting and the courage to keep shooting strangers. When it comes to documentary photography, Steve McCurry is a photographer who has to be mentioned. His works about historical conflicts, the loss of culture, old traditions, and contemporary culture gave me a big shock and they make the viewers feel that photographs are like telling a story. I used to be confused about my project but Steve McCurry’s work and ideas have helped me solve my issues. The works presented in this project reflect different aspects of the theme of Waiting and make viewers feel in new ways.
