‘Updating’ is a short film set in the near future where internet dating has evolved to incorporate virtual reality technology. It investigates the relationship between modern technology and human emotion and touches on themes deeply relevant to the present day: software such as Tinder keeps our interactions brief and shallow and positions us to treat them like addictive games rather than help us connect with each other.
Although the film echoes sentiments from the award-winning series Black Mirror, we knew we wanted to create an original and compelling piece. The film was written to encourage people to ask questions of themselves and the way they relate to the world and others around them. The more we researched virtual reality technology, the clearer it became that the concepts explored in our film could soon become a reality, with the possibility of widespread use of VR dating now actually on the horizon.
