THRE GHOST PILLBOX
My project illustrates about the landscape and my theme is History, Commemorate and Memory – Seeking historical clues of World War Two in Sussex, leaving permanent records for the past. The project focus on WW2 pillboxes that have been left after the period of the World War Tow, which seems like the memory and scar of the entire nation. Those relics lying at the coastline in silence, I choose four places: Lewes, Newhaven, Seaford, Cuckmere haven as my shooting target. Seventy years have passed since the World War Two officially ended, we can not experience it but every November has the numerous commemorative activities to recollect the past, as the intention of my project that I want to do in my own way to present and commemorate the old days.
Although these ruins are worn and chipped that have no functions for the current society and have been forgotten by the later generation, it still deems to be a plaintive whine of the British history, and which is also the eternal memory of soldier’s heart. I always believe that we live in a multidimensional world that people would not truly die, they just being transferred from our world to another different space as we called parallel universe. So I use the movement of a person in my project to create the effect of ghosts from that time, the meaning of this surrealism way is to say they have never left, and still stay here.
