Saboteur is a coming-of-age drama following antisocial 20-year-old Eva who confronts a ghost from her past, and with him, all her fears of intimacy and abandonment. Given this second chance, she must either recognise her flaws or lose him forever. We chose film for this story as it is emotionally heavy, and through framing, colour, and mise-en-scene this emotional depth can be strongly communicated. In a cinematic climate that is starting to prioritise diversity and representation, a film about complicated women has never been more appropriate.
Saboteur takes influence from films such as the ‘Before’ trilogy, Lost in Translation, Chungking Express, Lars and The Real Girl, Lady Bird, and Phantom Thread. The TV show 13 Reasons Why also influenced us in regards to the ‘split timeline’ narrative and editing style, with past and present running parallel to each other.
