Phubbing

Hoi Yi Chan

Phubbing is an animation about mobile dependency leading to addiction, a current phenomenon in society. With technological advancements mobile devices now dominate everyday life, which has resulted in social ignorance. ‘Phubbing’ is the act of ignoring what is going on around you.

The animation is inspired by Are You Lost In The World Like Me? (Moby & The Void Pacific, 2016) and tells the story of a young girl who is addicted to her mobile phone and facing different issues because of ‘phubbing’. The animation draws on hand-drawn 2D animation aesthetics and aims to highlight the seriousness of social problems caused by the over-reliance on mobile phones for both children and young adults, as they are the prime consumers of these technologies.
