My Role is a project which reconstructs scenes from mainstream films, reflecting on the issues that actresses face on set, as well as in real life. In a profession dominated by privileged men, female actors face misogyny and inequality on a regular basis. The sexualised and degrading roles women have been given in film thus far, also reflects the role women are expected to have within society.
One of the biggest inspirations for this body of work has stemmed from the Me Too movement in Hollywood. Women and some men, uniting to stand up against sexual harassment in the work-place, and informing the world about the significance of these problems. Some of the motion pictures chosen here might come across to some as feel-good or empowering. However, the photographer unpicks the scenes to successfully justify the true nature of misrepresentation of female characters in these stills.
