This project is about artists in our everyday lives, such as a noodle maker, a florist, a tattooist and so on. Through these photos I want to reveal more about these artists’ work. I chose to create documentary portraits because this way I can convey more through their expressions and motions.
I took this photo in a flower shop called Gunns. The staff work here every day. When I took the photo for the first time, one person asked me what the photo was for, and we talked about the work that she does in the shop every day. She waters and clips the flowers every morning. I was influenced by Diane Arbus’ work ‘Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park’. She records the whole process when shooting that boy and making a contact sheet. To shoot someone in a weird pose can make a great impression on audiences.
