In China tattoo culture is different from that in the UK, where it is increasingly more commonplace to see tattoos on people from all walks of life. There has recently been a larger number of overseas (Chinese) students getting tattooed when studying in the UK although this “modification” is not widely accepted in Chinese culture.
This project aims to look at this cultural shift and it investigates the kinds of messages that have become popular among Chinese students to permanently mark themselves with ink whilst studying in the UK. Liang has collated words and messages from students, words that in some ways illustrate the thoughts and feelings of an overseas student in the UK. Liang photographs these messages after they have been transferred to the student’s body.
